Custom Made, Handmade & Bench Made – Suits, Shoes, Shirts Differences & Terminology Explained

Published on Jun 20, 2016

Synopsis:

Familiarize yourself with these common terminologies in men’s clothing so you always know what you’re getting and get the most out of your money.

Custom made – simply means something is customized to your taste. – basically defining anything you want in your garment. – Umbrella term used by businesses to get you to spend more money. – Always ask the right questions. ( What they do and why they call themselves that and the process they have)
Handmade – Hand labor involved, that’s it! – Usually takes longer than doing it by machine and therefore, it costs more.
Machine made – Never advertised simply because people don’t associate high quality with it. – Note that if you know something is machine made, you know you should pay less for it.
Bench grade, Bench made or Hand grade – Basically, it is something that is between machine made and handmade, but the borders are not really defined. – A marketing term used to sell you a machine made product for a higher price.
Take note, buyer beware! Know and research what you want, what you can afford, and what is sold to you. It pays to have a better understanding of what you’re wearing.

Generico: A classy Bespoke (custom-made) suit shop in Hongdae

Published on Mar 17, 2015

Synopsis:

Generico is located in Hongdae
Mostly Koreans go to custom-made suit shops only when they are going to get married. In Korea, its customary for the Bride to buy a groom’s clothing for the wedding.
General people think of tailored suits are extremely expensive, but actually that only accounts for a small percentage of custom shops. Generally people go to a department store or SPA brands when they need a suit or men’s clothing, since its easy to buy. For others, a men’s suit is nothing else but a uniform for work.
Now you’re asking, what does GENERICO mean? Generico translates as ‘general’ in Italian. GENERICO was established to bring high-quality korean suits to the general public. . I used an Italian name for the company because Italian men’s styles are respected in the fashion industry. GENERICO focuses on ‘general’ men’s suit styling. we provide high quality, real tailored and classic suit styling in a reasonable price for the ‘general’ public.
So what makes GENERICO different than other suit shops? GENERICO is a BESPOKE tailor shop not a MTM (made to order from factory patterns) suit shop. GENERICO bespoke suit cuts from individual custom’s patterns and made by hand sewing. That means the suit fits like a glove, and is high quality. The most important thing is that the customer has total control over their suit from start to finish.
MTM suits are factory made using standard sized patterns. While the MTM suit is not bad and has a competitive price versus a bespoke tailor suit, its not truly a custom suit. The problem is nobody knows exactly what the difference between those two or doesn’t need to know about it. The MTM suit shop never say they are making an MTM suit for you!
As I said before we focusing on the ninety-nine precent of people, not the one percent. We provide quite reasonable prices for the customers with hand-made high quality suit.
Our hope is that people come to GENERICO when they need a men’s clothing. suits, shirts or pants. We hope you come visit our shop, and and experience the quality of a bespoke suit.

Inside Men’s Fashion House Kiton, Home of the $9,000 Suit

Published on Jun 12, 2015

Synopsis:

In this week’s Lap of Luxury, we visit Italian fashion brand Kiton. Never heard of it? When it comes to men’s bespoke shirts and suits, Kiton is the best of the best plus one. In fact, that’s the brand’s motto.
As the president of Kiton USA, Antonio Paone says in Italian: Il meglio del meglio piu uno.
Kiton was founded in the 1950s in Naples, Italy, as a fabric merchant. In the 1960s, Antonio’s uncle, Ciro Paone, transformed the brand into a tailoring business.
Five generations later, Kiton has grown enormously. A $40 million flagship store is located on 54th Street in New York City. More than 700 tailors work for the brand.
But quality fabrics and fine suiting are still the focus. Paone says you’ll often see 500 tailors working by hand in the Kiton factory, but you’ll never see a machine. Every Kiton suit is cut by hand, one by one, as suits were cut 50 years ago. Paone says the quality has not changed.
The Robb Report agrees. David Arnold, senior vice president at Robb Report, says that nobody surpasses Kiton in terms of menswear. In the June Best of the Best issue of the magazine, Kiton was awarded best suit for its handmade quality and attention to detail.
But that quality and attention will cost you. A basic bespoke suit at Kiton starts at $9,000. It’s 100 percent wool, 200 grams, 14 micron. A 100 percent cashmere blue summer weight suit will also run about $9,000. The top level Vicuna fabric, 200 grams, will run $60,000.
Paone says that material is truly the best of the best plus one. If it sounds outrageously expensive, he suggests coming in, taking a jacket and trying it on. Paone says when customers walk around in Kiton suits, and take their time to really feel the fabrics, they understand the incredible quality.
Let’s not forget about the custom shirts. They’re also entirely made by hand. Customers can choose every detail: the color, buttons, threads, style and monogram. They start at $500 and run up to $1,200 for Sea Island cotton. The fabrics are all the best cottons, all Italian.
In fact the only thing at Kiton that isn’t Italian is the name. Paone says Kiton comes from “chitone,” which is a Greek name for the fine linen tunics the Ancient Greek people used to wear to formal parties.

$100 Suit vs $1000 Suit – Differences Between Cheap & Expensive Suits – Gentleman’s Gazette

Published on May 18, 2016

In this video, we highlight the key differences between a $100 dollar suit and a $1000 dollar suit and explain to you what you have to look for so you get the best value for your money.
First, let’s focus on the $100 dollar suit. Basically, it is a completely machine-made suit that is sewn together in 2-3 hours max and there is no handwork whatsoever. When it comes to suits, hand sewing is better because it is more flexible and it adapts to your body more easily and so especially for a jacket, you always want more handwork. A $100 dollar suit is made of very cheap fabric and cheap lining, that means, it’s usually stretched polyester with nylon or other artificial fibers. Also, the raw materials may be cotton or wool that go into that fabric are of the lowest quality possible. It simply is stiffer, less comfortable, and you’re more prone to sweating in it.
A $100 suit has a glued interlining. So, what exactly is interlining and why do you use it? When you start out with fabric, you have a two-dimensional surface, in order to keep it in a three-dimensional shape, you need a second layer and the layer needs to be attached in a certain shape. For the $100 suit, this interlining is of very low quality and is glued to the fabric, that works in the beginning but it also acts as an insulator so you’re much more likely to overheat and sweat.
Another aspect of a $100 suit is the lack of attention to details. For example, the buttonholes are first sewn and then cut not the other way around that means you see some fraying. Also, the trimmings are usually low-quality, the buttons are plastic, the lining is polyester, and everything is made to remain low on the cost side but it also means low on the quality. The cut of a $100 suit can in theory, be as good as the on of a $1000 suit or a more expensive suit but in practice, that’s really rarely the case. More often than not, $100 suits are either very fashion-forward, with very skinny lapels and you can only wear them a year max, before they go out of fashion or they’re simply old-fashioned and the cut is boxy and bulky and simply not favorable.
Another pet peeve of mine is the deep-cut armhole that restricts your movement and $100 suits usually have this 90% of all cases. In recent years, it has changed a little bit, sometimes they have adopted more modern cuts and they try to go with details such as working buttonholes, but in reality, they still use cheap buttonholes and it still looks cheap.
The time that goes into a thousand dollar suit can range from 8 hours to 30 hours so that’s obviously a huge difference and you will also be able to feel that. Generally, a thousand dollar suit show some amount of handwork. Sometimes, they have decorative elements like hand-sewn buttonholes that look really nice, they use a silk thread that is shiny or a cotton thread, they may have machine-made buttonholes but it looks nice. They may have an interlining that is sewn in hand or a collar which makes it softer and fit better and make you look better.
The biggest advantage of a thousand dollar suit over a hundred dollar suit is the interlining and the construction. Where the $100 suit has a glued interlining, the $1000 suit has a half canvas or full canvas interlining. A half canvas is actually sewn to the fabric and it’s usually made of materials such as horsehair or cotton or wool and that way, it’s more breathable so you don’t overheat. To save on cost, this form of interlining is only used on the upper part of your body such as your chest and it’s glued at the bottom part of your jacket. Full canvas means that the interlining is sewn throughout your jacket and it’s the best version you can get. At a thousand dollar price point, usually, these canvases are made by machine and not by hand.
This little secret has helped me save a lot of money and to get quality suits. When I walk into a store and look at suits, the first thing I do is I flap up the collar and look at the stitching. If it is machine-sewn, I move on especially at a vintage store. If it’s hand-sewn, I take the jacket off and take a closer look. I do this because a hand-sewn collar indicate a very high quality. If the collar is hand-sewn, chances are, it’s a high-quality garment and it deserves a second look and you can use the hallmarks I described in this video to identify if you should buy it or not.

Published on Sep 19, 2016

Buying custom suits and shirts online is one of the best ways to get a clothes that fit well for pretty reasonable prices, especially if you don’t have an “off the rack” build. But buying made-to-measure clothing can be a very frustrating and expensive experience. You can waste your precious time and money if you don’t do it right.
I’ve got shirts and suits from all of the most popular MTM companies, including Indochino, Oliver Wicks, Knot Standard, CottonBrew, Vulture Suits, Deo Veritas and Black Lapel – to name a few. Here are 3 crucial lessons I’ve learned over the past few years, when it comes to buying MTM clothes. Also, I’ll explain the difference between made-to-measure, custom and bespoke. The difference between MTM vs. bespoke is especially important.

How a Suit Jacket Should Fit You | Mens Style Tips | Knotted Men

Published on Nov 2, 2015

In this video, I talk about how a suit jacket should fit.
Here are 6 tips to a proper fitting suit jacket. I hope this video will help you look stylish and feel confident in your suit jacket.
1. Shoulders are the most important part of your suit jacket. It is also costly to fix if they are not the right fit for you. Make sure to buy the right fitting jacket from the very beginning.
2. When your suit is buttoned, you should be able to slide your flat hand under your suit lapel easily. If you can fit a whole fist in your lapel easily then you know the suit jacket is too big for you.
3. Make sure the length of your suit jacket comes right down to your knuckles. Also It should cover your zippier in the front and cover the seat of your pants.
4. Make sure a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of your shirt cuffs is visible. Also your jacket sleeves should stop at your wrist bone. If they are too long, get them tailored.
5. Make sure to open all stitching on your suit jacket pockets, remove any labelling on your jacket sleeves and also open the stitching in the back vents.
6. Lastly, button your suit jacket when standing to give it a cleaner look and unbutton your suit jacket when you sit down so you don’t feel constricted.
